Contraceptive implants

Contraceptive implants are a long-term, reversible option. These small, flexible rods are inserted under the skin of the upper arm and release hormones to prevent pregnancy. They are highly effective, convenient, and suitable for a wide range of users, particularly for those seeking a long-term solution without daily attention.

The implants contains 150mg levonorgestrel, which is slow released over time. This prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation and also thickening the mucus in the cervical canal to prevent sperm from reaching and fertilising the egg.  The implants are inserted in a V shape under the skin of the upper arm by a trained must be inserted by a healthcare provider using local anaesthetic. The procedure lasts less than 10min and the woman is protected for 3 to 5 years, depending on the implant.

Implants are one of the most effective contraceptive methods: more than 99% effective, meaning fewer than 1 woman in 100 will become pregnant while using contraceptive implants.
