What is Levoplant?
Levoplant is an effective long-acting, reversible contraceptive method that provides women with greater choice in reproductive health options.
Why Levoplant ?
Effective: One of the most effective contraceptives available (*)
Easy to use: Simple insertion and removal
No estrogen: Avoids estrogen side effects
Reversible: Ideal for spacing or limiting births, with almost immediate return to fertility after removal
Levoplant is indicated for contraception up to three years after insertion.
Mechanism of action
Two small rods (each about the size of a matchstick) are inserted under the skin of the woman’s upper, inner arm by a trained provider. The rods slowly release levonorgestrel, a synthetic progestin. Levonorgestrel is the same ingredient used in oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptive pills, and intra-uterine systems; it is one of the best-understood and longest-studied ingredients used for contraception.
Levonorgestrel works by:
1.- Inhibiting ovulation
2.- Inhibiting implantation of the fertilized egg, and
3.- Thickening the cervical mucus so sperm cannot pass
Levoplant is a WHO-prequalified contraceptive implant effective at preventing pregnancy for up to 3 years.
It has been registered by the following health authorities:
Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)
Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority
Kenya’s Poisons and Pharmacy Board
