Avibela(TM)

AVIBELA is a reversible 52 mg levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (“hormonal IUD”) that is about 99% effectie at preventing pregnancy for up to 8 years and treats heavy menstrual bleeding for up to 5 years.

Highly effective, reversible contraception

• About 99% effective at preventing pregnancy*.

• Can be removed by a provider at any time.
• Does not alter fertility after removal.

• Can be replaced at the time of removal with a new AVIBELA if continued contraceptive protection or heavy menstrual bleeding treatment is desired.

Effective at treating heavy menstrual bleeding

• AVIBELA rapidly reduces menstrual blood loss, by 91% after 3 months of use and by 96% after 6 months.

Same-day insertion is possible

• Can be inserted at any time, if the provider is reasonably certain the woman is not pregnant.
• Same day insertion is possible for patients without clinical evidence of infection, if indicated based on standard screening guidelines.

Side Effects

• Like all medicines, hormonal IUDs can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The most common side effects of hormonal IUDs include vaginal bacterial infection, acne, nausea or vomiting, and abdominal pain, pelvic pain, weight increase, mood changes, back pain, yeast infection of the other part of the vagina, headache, pain during sex, breast pain, depression, vaginal discharge, anxiety, and menstrual-like cramping.

Mechanism of action

• The mechanism of action for contraception is thickening of the cervical mucus that inhibits the passage of sperm, inhibition of sperm mobility and function, and thinning of the uterine lining.
• The mechanism of action for treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding is thinning of the uterine lining.
